Home Update: Construction, Architect & Painters… Oh My!

It’s been about a month since I announced we’re moving so I thought I’d give you guys an update on all that’s been going on. Most importantly, the house is now officially ours and construction is about to begin! At least, we think. (Why do permits take so long?) As I mentioned on Insta Stories, for those following along, it’s a renovated home. It was built in the early 1900’s and the previous owners did an amazing job of renovating it from top to bottom a couple of years ago. They actually weren’t planning on moving (The husband got a job offer in another state that he couldn’t refuse. Sound familiar?) so they put a lot of love into that little house and it shows.

We don’t need to much as far as remodeling goes. But there’s a basement we want to finish, putting in another bedroom and full bath (a.k.a. “The In-Law Suite), sitting area and storage (Eventually when we’ve financially recovered, we’ll do the attic, which is so charming, too.) and we’re adding window seats, more light and a lowered mantle to the living room to open up the space a bit more as well as replacing some old windows throughout the house that weren’t done in the reno. I can’t wait till it’s all done and to be able to show you the before and after’s!

Beyond signing a million papers to actually obtain the house, meeting with contractors and an architect, getting estimates from painters and deciding on decorators, I’ve been spending a lot of time on decor and design sites, Pinterest and searching for every home sale out there. As you can imagine- and likely know- it all adds up, quick! Who knew how expensive windows were?! Or how much math is involved in a project like this (It was my worst subject so you can imagine what a challenge it’s been for me!)? Or how many shades of white there are?

I’m becoming educated in all things home design and have a whole new vocabulary and appreciation for people who do far more than us or a home from scratch. I honestly feel like it’s become my full time job and this site and Lilly have had to take a bit of a back seat. But, I’m having a ton of fun. Finally investing in some pretty pieces, getting to work with a (fairly) blank canvas and put my spin on things, creating a home for my family… it really is a dream come true.

I cannot wait to share more with you, from dining, living and playroom design boards to actual in-progress photos to the final reveals, to (Don’t read this part, Zach.) an eventual housewarming party… stay tuned for much, much more.

Check out the nursery and office design boards as well as Lilly’s already finished room that’s being transferred over to the new house.
